Key Responsibilities

• System Diagnostics and Repairs: Perform expert electrical fault finding and execute necessary repairs to ensure operational continuity.

• Agricultural Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and service specialized equipment, including pumps, motors, and complex irrigation systems.
• Renewable Energy Management: Oversee the installation, monitoring, and servicing of solar power systems and backup generators.
• Multi-Sector Facility Work: Conduct general electrical maintenance for residential, commercial, and agricultural buildings.
• Safety and Compliance: Ensure all electrical work strictly adheres to national regulations and safety standards.
• Documentation and Reporting: Accurately complete job cards and maintenance reports to track system health and repairs.
• Site Supervision: Supervise assistants and manage external contractors to ensure project standards are met.
• Emergency Standby: Participate in a standby roster for emergency after-hours call-outs as required.

Requirements

• Qualified Electrician
• Proven experience with solar systems, backup power, pumps, and motors.
• General building maintenance experience; air-conditioning knowledge is a plus.
• Valid South African driver’s licence and own reliable transport.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a rural environment.
• Proficiency in English and Afrikaans; IsiZulu proficiency is highly advantageous.
• Computer literacy and a commitment to accurate reporting.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading fruit processing business within the Fruitvest group, a South African company operating large-scale fruit processing facilities in the Lowveld region. Fruitvest's operations focus on the production of citrus juice (NFC – Not From Concentrate), subtropical fruit pulps, concentrates, frozen products, citrus fruit cells, cold-pressed oils and other value-added fruit products for local and international markets.

The role requires a technically driven General Manager to lead and optimise a high-performance fruit processing facility. This is a technical-first leadership position suited to a hands-on operator capable of managing a complex processing environment focused on citrus and subtropical fruits, including puree production, concentration processes and aseptic packing operations.

The successful candidate will assume full responsibility for plant performance, production efficiency, maintenance strategy, food safety, quality standards and team leadership across a three-shift operation of up to 100 employees. A strong mechanical and operational background is essential, together with the ability to drive reliability, minimise downtime and implement continuous improvement initiatives.

The position will oversee a facility that incorporates fruit receiving, processing, extraction, concentration, packaging and aseptic production technologies, ensuring world-class operational standards while supporting the continued growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Production Optimization: Accurately assess and manage plant throughput and production yields to ensure maximum efficiency.
• Bottleneck Resolution: Proactively identify and resolve technical or process-related bottlenecks within the processing lines.
• Performance Analysis: Apply a strong mathematical and analytical mindset to monitor and improve overall operational performance.
• Quality Standards: Ensure that all products consistently meet established quality benchmarks.
• Strategic Planning: Oversee all plant administration and planning to maintain smooth daily operations.
• Procurement Management: Coordinate fruit procurement to ensure it is strictly aligned with production needs.
• Operational Execution: Manage the day-to-day execution of all facility activities with a focus on technical depth.

Requirements

• Technical Foundation: Strong mechanical knowledge is required, with a preference for a qualified millwright.
• Management Experience: Significant experience in leading large teams and managing complex industrial operations.
• Operational Expertise: A working understanding of cold storage and refrigeration systems (down to -25°C) is essential.
• Hands-on Mindset: You must be able to "get your hands dirty" and show a clear preference for being on the factory floor rather than being purely managerial.
• Shift Management: Experience managing a 24-hour, three-shift operation of up to 100 personnel.
• Relocation: On-site presence is essential; candidates must be willing to relocate to the Hoedspruit area if not already local.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance & Repairs:

• Perform electrical and mechanical maintenance on plant machinery and equipment
• Conduct daily inspections and report any deviations
• Diagnose faults and perform breakdown repairs efficiently
• Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately

Preventative Maintenance:

• Execute scheduled preventative maintenance programmes
• Ensure machinery and equipment are maintained to optimal operating standards

Plant Performance:

• Ensure continuous operation of production equipment
• Minimize downtime through proactive maintenance and fast response to breakdowns

Projects & Improvements:

• Assist with minor plant improvements and modifications
• Support initiatives to improve equipment performance and reliability
• Manage and utilize critical spares effectively

Standby Duties:

• Perform standby duties as required
• Respond to after-hours breakdowns and urgent maintenance issues

Compliance & Safety:

• Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards and company policies
• Identify and report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses
• Ensure all tools and equipment are used safely

Housekeeping:

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized working environment
• Ensure compliance with hygiene and safety standards

 

Requirements / Qualifications:

• Trade Test Certificate: Millwright
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a production environment
• Strong electrical and mechanical maintenance experience
• Experience in an animal feed or FMCG environment will be advantageous (not essential)
