Job Title: Field Service Technician
Location: Strand, Western Cape
Industry: Water Treatment / Utilities / Industrial
Contract Type: Permanent
About the Role:
This organization is a well-established South African leader in water treatment technology, operating since 1968 and recognized for providing reliable, cost-effective solutions for water purification and treatment. With a track record spanning over 50 years, they deliver successful water management solutions, including Rain & Grey Water, Wastewater Treatment, and Mobile Packaged Water Treatment Plants. They pride themselves on world-class products that are durable, cost-effective, and easy to maintain, built in Africa for African conditions, with an extensive African footprint.
As a Trade-Tested Millwright, you will be a key part of a dedicated maintenance team responsible for the upkeep, commissioning, and optimization of critical equipment at potable- and waste-water treatment plants across South Africa. You will maintain pumps, motors, dosing skids, filtration units, electrical control panels, and PLC-controlled systems, ensuring operational excellence and contributing directly to water security. This role requires a commitment to a zero-harm culture, upholding quality management system (QMS), occupational health and safety (OHS), and environmental management system (EMS) compliance. You will have the opportunity to develop towards Reliability Technician or Supervisor roles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Installation & Commissioning: Assemble and start-up pumps, RO skids, generators, and Motor Control Centers (MCCs); verify Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and sign hand-over. This work directly accelerates revenue service and ensures the plant meets potable-water standards instantly.
- Preventative Maintenance: Execute weekly vibration, lubrication, and run-time inspections, capturing results in SAP PM or alternative systems. High on-time preventative maintenance reduces fouling, maintains recovery, and keeps the plant within its licence-to-operate conditions.
- Corrective Maintenance: Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical breakdowns, aiming to return critical assets to service within a 4-hour Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) target. Quick recovery from breakdowns is crucial for protecting water security and avoiding supply-failure penalties.
- Condition Monitoring: Conduct monthly thermography and oil analysis on 90% of rotating assets where applicable. Data-driven reliability helps avoid catastrophic failures of pumps and gearboxes that could jeopardize compliance with contract water volumes.
- Safe Work Execution: Apply Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout-Tagout (LOTO), confined-space, and chlorine-gas protocols; lead toolbox talks. A zero-harm culture is essential, especially when dealing with high-voltage MCCs, chemicals (like chlorine dioxide and acids), and confined-space clarifiers.
Requirements:
- SAQA Red-Seal Millwright
- N4 or higher (Electro-Mechanical)
- Minimum 3 years post-trade experience in the water or utility sector
- Code 08 driver’s licence and own transport
- Computer literate – proficient in MS Office and CMMS (SAP PM / Pragma)
- Medically fit and able to work in confined spaces and at heights
- Monday – Friday, 07:30-16:30, plus 1-in-3 standby weekends.
- Advantageous Skills:
- PLC fault finding (Siemens S7-1200, Allen-Bradley CompactLogix)
- Wireman’s licence (Three-Phase)
- VSD commissioning (Invertek, Freecon, ABB, Danfoss)
- Analogue instruments calibration
- CMMS power-user (preventative & analytics)
What We Offer:
- A stable working environment with significant growth potential, including development towards Reliability Technician or Supervisor roles.
- Opportunity to work on diverse water purification systems, from 200ltr/hr to 60000ltr/hr.
- Ongoing training and skills development, including instructor-led commissioning training.
- A company vehicle for travel to client plants.
- Competitive remuneration (implied by the specialized nature and responsibilities of the role).
- Potential for standard benefits such as medical aid and pension fund.
